Bach and the Stile Antico
Ars Eloquentiae
Fitzwilliam String Quartet
St Salvator's Chapel Choir
Tom Wilkinson, director
The 'Mass in B Minor', renowned as one of Bach's greatest masterpieces, contains several movements in the stile antico (the style developed by Palestrina and other sixteenth-century). This CD presents a fascinating selection of music by Bassani, Caldara and Palestrina which shaped Bach's understanding of this self-consciously archaic mode of composition. The CD concludes with the Credo section of the Mass itself.
